Slow Food USA Employment


Slow Food USA is not currently hiring. Please check back as new positions may open.




Slow Food USA has interns in the office year-round.

From January to May, we offer a spring semester internship to students for college credit. Students can apply November 1-15.

We also offer a summer internship, open to current college students, recent graduates and young professionals hoping to learn about the food movement. Summer interns are in the office June through August. We accept summer applications April 1-15.

Biodiversity
We are looking for an intern interested in preserving America's biodiversity to help research Slow Food chapter biodiversity projects and generate or edit case studies; develop how-to guides for the Slow Food USA website; research and revise endangered variety/species nominations to the Slow Food Ark of Taste; write weekly biodiversity-themed posts for the Slow Food USA blog; assist with the planning and follow-up of fall events (Biodiversity Committee annual meeting, Terra Madre, regional events).


Communications
Slow Food USA is searching for multiple interns to work as a part of our communications team. These interns will: assist with writing news releases, media alerts, backgrounders, Q&As, web copy, etc; support social media efforts posting information to Facebook, Twitter and the Slow Food USA blog; pitch story ideas to support publicity campaign, including print and broadcast opportunities; develop, implement and track email marketing campaigns; update media lists and track coverage on a daily basis. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to learn the "ins" and "outs" of a comprehensive marketing campaign.


Development
The Development team is looking for an intern to assist with research for major donor prospects and grant proposals; preparation and execution of donor appeals at the membership and high donor level; and maintenance of donor database and development records in support of development and membership efforts. The Development intern will learn valuable fundraising skills while supporting our work to promote good, clean and fair food.


Executive Support Team
Ensure the smooth functioning of the President of Slow Food USA's daily activities. Work hand in hand with the senior leadership team to prepare research briefings, logistical arrangements, and communications with the top players in the food and agriculture movement. Outstanding attention to detail, ability to work in a fast-past environment, facility with disseminating complex research, and sharp time management and interpersonal skills are essential.


Network Engagement
Volunteer leaders are the engines behind the Slow Food USA network’s ability to change the world and take care of each other at the same time. “Network engagement” is how we describe the practice of bringing people in, getting them involved, and training them up to be leaders of community groups. Network Interns assist with replying to and contacting current and prospective leaders via phone and email; managing network databases; and writing content for the Slow Food USA blog and leader communications. Strong writing, phone and relationship-management skills are essential. Prepare to be inspired.


News
The news intern keeps track of relevant news and current events, and ensures that Slow Food USA's staff and network are well informed and able to use news proactively. This is a newly created position. Responsibilities will include scanning a wide range of news web sites, ideally every day; compiling news clips into a daily email that goes out to all SFUSA staff; identifying news that we can use proactively and/or share within the network; and assisting the Communications Team with social media (blog, Facebook, Twitter), compiling research about stories of interest.
We are open to creative and part-time schedules, but prefer that the news intern be able to devote a few hours each day (5 days a week) to scanning and compiling the news.


Administrative and Leadership Support
Slow Food USA is looking for an intern to learn about program administration and assist with managing Governor Committee (agendas, note-taking, communications) alongside the Director; managing scheduling of Director and Program Staff; management of communications (email and phone); light filing; and helping the Director to manage network engagement project. The Program team will need someone who has excellent writing/communications skills, detail oriented, and can manage multiple tasks.


Terra Madre
Terra Madre is an international conference that gathers sustainable food producers, farmers, cooks, educators and activists from around the world to connect and share their stories, traditions, and innovative solutions for keeping small-scale agriculture and sustainable food production alive and well. The TM intern will assist the coordinator of the 500 person US delegation by communicating with delegates both my email and phone, by tracking delegates and their information, and offering general administrative support. An opportunity to come into contact with a wide variety of food professionals from around the country.
Needed: experience using Excel, attention to detail. Event planning experience and conversational Italian a plus.




General tasks and responsibilities shared by all interns:
  • Assisting with our ongoing projects about improving our food supply and taste education
  • Answering phone inquiries on issues of sustainable and artisanal food production
  • Researching, writing and fact-checking articles, features, event listings and other projects for our quarterly magazine, the Snail, as well as our blog
  • Assisting in fulfilling merchandise orders and requests for promotional materials
  • Attending to various member service issues, such as member comments and questions
  • General administrative tasks and other office duties
Qualifications:
  • A keen interest in food, food policy, nutrition, advocacy, and/or campaign-building
  • Currently enrolled in or graduated from an accredited university or comparable experience
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively independently, with minimal supervision, while also team-building via phone and email
  • Professional, friendly, fearless phone demeanor
  • Being a quick study and a curious learner
  • Good writing skills
  • Good general and internet research skills
  • Creativity and willingness to have good ideas and share them
  • Computer skills, including Word and Excel

Minimum 20 hours a week, 3 month commitment (starting September to December, flexible). Interns who can dedicate more time to the internship will gain more from it and be involved in more interesting work. Internships are unpaid at this time, however many students can earn academic credit for their time at Slow Food USA.
